Congratulations to Chris Handy on winning The Durham County Golf Union Stroke play Championship played at Wynyard Golf Club. Rounds of 74,70,68 and a final round 66, saw him tie Jack Ainscough. In the final round Chris had it all under control after a birdie on 16, only to find a bunker on 17, with a horrible plugged lie. A double Bogey followed, but knowing he needed a birdie on 18, to at least force a tie, he duly delivered, with a fine wedge shot to 3 feet. In the playoff, over the 16/17/18th holes, Chris immediately birdied 16, as Jack had a 6, pars on the 17th followed. 18th Tee shot saw Chris in perfect position, unfortunately Jack found a bunker, a good pitch and 2 putts, and the title was won!!!! First time in 43 years the title has been won by a SMGC player, last time was Jack Ord in 1974, at Seaton Carew. Delighted for Chris, and all of his family, he is a product of the County Bursary Scheme, is at College in USA, and has come back a very impressive golfer. He leaves for USA again in late August, and as a club, we wish him well in every competition he represents the club in during the rest of his UK stay.
